Well this just sucks. I have it on good authority that Sam Calagione’s Brew Masters has been pulled from the air after just a handful of episodes. It was good to see craft beer on TV while it lasted I guess.
While the show was well-received by beer geeks, the general public was lukewarm about it. I’m sure the fact that Brew Masters was moved from Sunday to Monday to Thursday didn’t help.
But then at the end of the article there is an update that states...
[Discovery Channel] is working on completing the final episode #6 of Brew Masters. It will be airing by early spring. They have NOT cancelled the show. Brew Masters was slated for an initial 6 episode run. Once the 6 are completed, Discovery Channel & Dogfish Head will evaluate the response and future direction.
Sooooo, whats the deal? I guess we will have to just wait and see.

And, I know it's been said, but it really is little more than an extended commercial for Dogfish Head. (and don't get me wrong, I do love Dogfish Head, but I agreed with Brandon Wright before - they might as well have called the show "A Day in the life of Dogfish Head" instead of "Brewmasters")
It doesn't surprise me if it is canceled though. It's to simple to keep the attention of beer geeks and there isn't enough drama for the rest of the world. Sam is just to likable of a guy. They need someone who can rub folks the wrong way, the "Paul Sr." of the brewing world. That will create the drama needed for a successful reality based show. Can you imagine American Chopper lasting as long as it has if they didn't scream and yell at each other?
Another (unoriginal) thought about the show. The formula is similar to those cake shows, but with those shows, in the end you get to see a cake that looks like the Empire State Building or Elmo or whatever. The final product is visually interesting. With Brewmasters you get to see some liquid in a glass. Not so interesting.
Anyway, I hope the decision makers at the network don't completely give up on the idea of a craft beer based show. There are possibly successful ideas out there. Maybe follow a group of brewers or homebrewers as the travel the festival and competition circuit like on BBQ Pitmasters, or even Americas next top Brew Master where homebrewers compete for a job as a brewer at DFH, or Stone, or Sierra Nevada or whatever

Kinda sat there thinking, "I love beer, brewing beer and am pretty much obsessed with beer and the beer culture, why am I having trouble sitting here staying entertained by a beer show!"
