I tried to keep this in the same general form, but I'm no playwrite or poet. Read it all the way to the bottom and you'll see what my real thoughts are. I may hack at a lot of beer snobbery and some of the geekdom, but when it comes down to it, I really could give a rat's backside less what anyone does. I just holding the mirror up...
Something Beer Snobbish This Way Comes
(With apologies to Macbeth and William)
By the pricking of my thumb,
Something wicked this way comes.
Open up, caps,
Or pour wide with a draught,
A beer snob this way does come.
Looking down their nose,
At yellow beer that flows,
And the little man who knows no better
And only drinks from the big three letter,
MBC and all it sows.
Even those who enjoy a good draught,
And appreciate the smaller brewer’s craft,
Can be picked apart
If not true at heart,
In the eyes of a beer snob you’re daft.
Use the right glass!
Or you’re disrespecting the mash.
Bring the temperature up right
For beers black as night,
Or the beer cultures will clash.
There are many of us
Across the US
We know quite a lot
We’ve given it thought
It’s just that we don’t want to stress.
After all, we’re all beer geeks.
A great beer we all seek.
We know the same things as you,
We just don’t always feel we have to,
Explore every valley and climb every peak.
Let me be honest and blunt
To me friends out there ya… brutes
I really don’t care what you do
As long as you’re really enjoying your brew
Just because I’m not snobbing it up, doesn’t mean I nae know the truth.
Do I let it ruin my day? Nope.
And that's the reason I would not call you a beer snob... asking for a non-chilled glass if it's available is fine. Freaking out because you can't get one, not so much.
I also don't have a problem with drinking beer at "desired" temperates in the "appropriate" glass... just people who let it get in the way of really enjoying either the beer or present company if that's all they're focused on.
That is my definition of Beer Snobbery. Flat out REFUSING to try another beer. I personally (and would argue that most Craft Beer Drinkers) don't look down on people who only drink BMC, but I do try to convince them to drink other things. To at least try something different.
To me Craft Beer is and exciting world, and a world that I am very passionate about. I want to share that world with as many of my friends as possible.
As for glassware and temperature which seem to be major sore spots for you, I do prefer to drink my beer at proper temp and out of a glass. I don't have different glasses for each style, but I do have a set of goblets that I use for beer. Now, will I turn down a beer that is too cold or offered to me in the bottle? Do I refuse a beer that is served to me in a chilled pint glass? Well, it depends, If I am somewhere where it is not too much trouble to have a glass, I ask for one. If I am given a chilled pint glass in a bar, I ask for a non chilled one. If I am somewhere where this is impracticable, I drink the beer and enjoy it. Is there a difference. Your damn skippy. Do I let it ruin my day? Nope.
